What Is an Ingrown Toenail?

It happens when edge orcorner of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin instead of lying flat above it. This causes pain, redness, swelling and sometimes infection. The big toe is the most commonly affected but any toenail can develop this problem. Common causes include cutting nails too short or with curved edge, wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear, injury or repeated pressure on toe.
